The country's worst flooding in half a century, caused in part by unusually heavy monsoon rain, has killed 373 people since mid-July and disrupted the lives of nearly 2.5 million. As the water level has reached a critical point the Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra told residents in the surrounding outskirt of Bankok to evacuate. Streets around residential area near important sites such as the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew are flooded and many parts of the capital could be in danger. Thousands of Bangkok residents flee as the river level is predicted to rise as 1.2 billion cubic meters of northern runoff, about the volume of 480,000 Olympic pools, is expected to arrive in Bangkok along with the arrival of high tides.
